Anne with an E season 3 on Netflix

I opened my e-mail this evening and found this message awaiting me:

AWAE season 3 e-mail

I’m slightly shocked Netflix is actually promoting this because they haven’t really done much promotion-wise as yet. Also, in the e-mail it says ” Season 3, 3rd January” but not “Final Season” like it says on the actual Netflix page…

AWAE netflix

Does that actually mean something? Season 3 was the best Anne season yet, this Netflix trailer gives a little glimpse…

… and I am still tweeting every day in the hopes that it gets renewed for at the very least a season 4. Here’s still hoping! In the meantime I am going to listen to the newly released soundtrack of Anne with an E on Spotify (after a good night’s rest, that is. It’s after midnight and I need to get some sleep…)

Bring Anne home!

The phrase “BRING ANNE HOME” is trending worldwide on Twitter right now…

…after last night’s devasting news from showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett that Anne with an E will not be renewed!

I love you so much for trying so hard and fighting a fierce fight with your big hearts and beautiful souls. You are a force of nature. Look at this amazing artwork inspired by love for ANNE WITH AN E!! I mean, I am amazed and so grateful. I have been moved to tears so many times in the last few weeks… so many, many tears. This is my child. I birthed her, I helped her grow, I cherish and adore her. AnnE means everything to me 🧡 Please know that we fought, too. We tried to change their minds. We tried to find a new home. We tried for a finale movie… We tried our best. “Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing.” LM Montgomery said that. Either way, we tried 🧡 Art and Commerce is never an easy marriage. I often find it inexplicable. This is one of those times. But it’s impossible to argue with words like Economics, Algorithms, Demographics, etc., etc. But those words and others like them are the reason why the Networks don’t want to continue. And we didn’t find a taker anywhere else 🧡 I know you’re upset and disappointed, sad and angry — I completely understand — because our beloved AnnE has been snatched away. If there was something more to do I would do it 🧡 So now you know what I know. I guess this is a tragical romance after all. But then again love is love is love is love is love. And love is not lost when it is nurtured. We will always love our Anne with an E. We will always love Green Gables with our whole hearts and everything it stands for. They can’t take that away from us 🧡 I love you so much. Thank you for fighting and loving my AnnE as much as I do 🧡 Artwork by @emeriart and @luztapiaart #annewithane #awae #family #kindredspirits #foreverandaday 🦉🧡

A post shared by Moira Walley-Beckett (@moirawalleybeckett) on

Tweeted my disappointment last night when I found out about it…

In Moira’s first post, the sentence “There is no way to revive Anne with an E anywhere at this point” gives rise to the hope that maybe if we keep fighting, it will be able to be revived at a later point? Apparently Lucifer fans were faced with smilar messages and the show got renewed after all a while later. So, is there still a glimmer of hope somewhere?

In her second post Moira mentions that it’s impossible to argue with words like Economics, Algorithms, Demographics and those words and others like them are why the networks won’t continue the series. The networks say this before Anne season 3 (the strongest season so far!) has even aired on Netflix! This really confounds me! Moira also says “Art and commerce is never an easy marriage” but why does that mean that commerice always has to win over art? I truly hate that.

… have already brilliantly risen to the occasion with their protest-art. I know that me writing and tweeting about this gets old, but I can’t help myself, I so fervently wish for the 4th season as well. So, here I am (in a hotel room during a weekend away!) adding my voice once again to the campaign to #renewannewithane, even now with so much hope lost…

Anne with an E – fave protests

I’ve been collecting some Anne with an E social media protests over time that I really like and thought I’d share them here. I still can’t believe they only gave us something like 12 hours to bask in the glory of that wonderful finale and then everything came tumbling down with the announcement that the show was being cancelled. That really was a huge dampener on very high spirits just as everyone was already getting excited for a next season. So, yeah, I’m still disappointed and still fighting for this renewal myself. Hence this post!

When the whole outrage over the cancellation started, Amybeth McNulty who plays the lead role of Anne on the show, tweeted this. It showcases some really cool Anne fanart that makes even more sense when you see season 3. I love these too.

Just before the cancellation was announced a fan who also drew some of the art above, made her own version of the title sequence to Anne with an E, featuring her own art. It’s really cool!

Just like Anne tries to console Marilla here, I too hope everything will turn out right in the end and that we will get that 4th season at least (preferably also the originally planned 5th):

There is an episode in season 3 with a protest action and I love how fans have used images from that to protest the Anne with an E cancellation.

The following tweet features stills from the season 3 finale episode that has Gilbert (played by Lucas Jade Zumann) sprinting through the streets. A silly play on the sound of his name, such a dad-joke in a way, but it has me chuckling every time.

I also like this one, a map that shows how diversely spread the Anne with an E  fandom is. And yes, I placed my pin on it too. (Oh, I  see the map doesn’t open for me anymore, maybe it does for you, the reader?)

Marilla being just as angry as I feel about the cancellation:

More fanart, this time liked by Moira Walley-Beckett, the showrunner!

For the first time ever, I have been watching videos on YouTube of people reacting to watching episodes of Anne with an E. That’s a whole new world to me, but this little video of this guy’s reaction to episode 10 (he’s I think the most prominent Anne– reactor) followed by a small video edit of the show made me laugh. Contains SPOILERS!

I also really liked this mini-edit of Anne contradicting everything she said about Gilbert by her actions in the season finale. Again: SPOILERS if you watch this!

https://twitter.com/kindredshirbrt/status/1201162020101459969

This show also showcases diversity.  Black people are introduced into Anne’s very white world, as are native Americans, people who are gay play an important role and in the season 3 finale there was a deaf-mute young lady playing a small role that was apparently meant to be fleshed out more in season 4. Yes, a season 4 is so much needed!

And one of the things that really cracks me up is that every time CBC Television (the channel that cancelled the show along with Netflix) posts something on Instagram or Twitter, most responses are all about “#renewannewithane”. I’m sure it gets very annoying to those running the CBC social media accounts but it still makes me laugh.

Someone addressing that issue in the comments to a specific tweet 🙂 :

Another really fun thing is a video someone made, sort of re-capping the protest until now, and it’s pretty accurate! I don’t know who this shaking hands guy in the video is, must be from some show, but this is brilliantly done. I especially love the snub at the end.

Last but not least, I came across this on Tumblr yesterday, which made me grin as well, so I tweeted it. No spoilers in this little funny video, taken from season 1:

I’m sure there are far more good and fun protests, these are just a few of the ones that struck me as I came across them. The hashtags for renewal have been tweeted over 8 million times by the last count I saw:

The cast, crew, production company and the channels have been extremely quiet of late. I hope that means that the fans are being heard and a renewal is somehow being considered behind the scenes. I guess the mood in the fandom can be summarized as follows:

Fingers crossed for that renewal. I still remain hopeful.

#renewannewithane, #saveannewithane

The Anne feels

I’m doing something here now that I’ve never done before and it’s all for Anne with an E because I so very, very much want to see it renewed for a fourth season! I have really hesitated to post this as it’s all about my face and I’m not too fond of my face, but in the end I couldn’t resist the urge to show how much this show does to me emotionally and therefore also physically.

If you have read my blog these recent few weeks, you know that I am completely in love with Anne with an E (this past season 3 has been just above and beyond!) and I am completely down in the dumps over the news that it’s being cancelled. There’s been a Twitter uproar with millions of tweets protesting this end, and I’m right there protesting along! I don’t know what it is exactly about this show that makes me feel so much but it really has come to mean a lot to me. And I’m not just talking about the Anne and Gilbert central characters! Matthew and Marilla and Bash are my other favourites, I just love their stories…

I’m so addicted that over on YouTube I have been watching reaction videos as YouTubers post their reactions to the episodes. I like watching a 16 year old girl’s reactions, Michaelafied, her reaction to the final season 3 episode is here. There’s a Brit guy who goes by Trophy Muncher who is really outspoken and makes me laugh. His reaction here. And I like to see this Jay guy react as well, here. I swear, the feels they describe are real! I’ve had them too!

I know my face is an open book, so for the first time ever I wondered what I’d look like reacting to an episode. I decided to re-watch the season finale in its entirety for a second time (instead of bits here and there) and switched on my laptop camera. I never filmed it to share it, otherwise I would’ve made sure I was looking better and sitting in a better location, not slumped down in my bed. For once (and once only!) I was curious about what my own reactions would look like. In the video I look pretty awful already and by the end I look worse! The emotion is real, though… I’m not a huge fan of looking at myself, but to drive home the point how much this show does to me, even on a re-watch, I decided to post screencaps anyhow, taken from the video I made. The video is pretty bad quality, so would be torturous to watch anyhow and if I posted it, it would also give away all the spoilers for the finale of season 3. As this season has yet to air for a bigger audience on Netflix in January, I didn’t want to spoil everything. (Go ahead, stream it there, seasons 1 and 2 are already up! The more views, the more they may consider continuing it!) So, I’m posting picture reactions here that should say a lot on their own and should drive home the point how much Anne with an E needs to be continued!

Anyway, here goes: Esther reacts to the season 3 finale of Anne with an E. A tad spoilery with pictures from the episode, even though I do remain vague about what actually happens in those pictures. This post is mostly about documenting the rollercoaster ride of emotions.

The previous episode had ended on a cliffhanger, so going into this one with lots of questions. This was me during the opening scene (and yes, that is a Hobbit poster behind me. Mr Esther loved the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies as well as I did, so that’s a shared thing to have on our wall). I still look relatively put-together here. I didn’t bother with my usual mascara or anything because with this second viewing, I knew what was coming.

01 Opening scene

The next scene is at teacher Miss Stacy’s house, with Gilbert, Anne, Diana (and others not shown here):

Anne Gilbert 3x10 (4)Anne Gilbert 3x10 (3)vlcsnap-2019-11-28-22h50m46s363

My reactions to that whole scene were these, fun but oh sweet torture:

Reactions to a baffling scene with Matthew and an endearing one with Bash, his mother and his daughter:

vlcsnap-2019-11-28-17h41m09s182vlcsnap-2019-11-28-17h42m20s160

Then came a scene with Gilbert, I reference this picture I posted before, won’t give anything else away:

Anne Gilbert 3x10 (22)

Oh my goodness, that scene was just so utterly beautiful! I’m not a religious person, but it sure looks like I’m praying!

I had about half a minute to compose myself:

12 Composing myself

Then came this scene, with something dramatic happening right before it and also a misunderstanding after it:

vlcsnap-2019-11-26-10h12m58s966

Even though this was my second viewing, I was literally shaking the laptop!

Seriously, this show!!! Then came some more up and down scenes and one with Matthew that broke my heart:

Something a little more lighthearted followed, with the introduction of 2 new characters who seem like so much fun! One of the reasons we need a season 4 is to see how this develops!

vlcsnap-2019-11-28-18h01m22s955vlcsnap-2019-11-28-18h01m39s462

“Curfew is not a suggestion” – loved that and a scene with the girls right after as well.

This episode just raged on, with touching scenes for Bash again and seeing Anne’s friend Cole again at aunt Josephine’s house.

vlcsnap-2019-11-28-18h14m35s736vlcsnap-2019-11-28-18h11m39s497

And it only got more dramatic. I posted these pictures before…

Anne Marilla Matthew 3x10 (5)Anne Marilla Matthew 3x10 (8)

… and this happened while I was watching that! Yep, I ugly-cried.

I tried to compose myself, smiling while drying my tears…

… and from there the action took off (as if I hadn’t been run ragged already)! Anne had a chance meeting and yes, she looks all grown up!

vlcsnap-2019-11-28-18h25m05s840vlcsnap-2019-11-28-18h25m45s592

And when she turns around again with her parasol, she is about to hear something very important.

Gilbert is confronted by someone on the train (oh, how I loved that scene!)…

Anne 3x10 Confused Gilbert (6)

…and we move into a situation which literally had me throwing my arms up into the air.

Then I got feels corresponding to stuff happening here:

Anne Gilbert 3x10 (89)

Followed by feels for what happens here:

Anne Gilbert 3x10 (108)Anne Gilbert 3x10 (109)

And then we come to the next to last scene with Anne, Matthew and Marilla:

Anne Marilla Matthew 3x10 (13)

So touching!

We end on this:

Anne end 3x10 (2)

With me looking like this and saying “This cannot be the end!”

I slowly come back to the real world, as I switch off the webcam, looking a lot less put-together than at the beginning, with shell shocked eyes and hair all over the place.

42 Back to earth

Seriously, I have loved many shows but I have rarely had a show do this much to my emotions. This finale episode was a real rollercoaster ride, with barely a second to recover from one scene to the next, and I loved it. Even on re-watching, my reactions remained extreme, so you can imagine what my first reactions were like.

Thank you to Amybeth McNulty (Anne), Lucas Jade Zumann (Gilbert), Geraldine James (Marilla), R.H. Thomson (Matthew), Dalmar Abuzeid (Bash) and Dalila Bela (Diana) for their outstanding performances in this episode. And thank you to Moira Walley-Beckett for making such an extraordinary show!

Anne Gilbert Moira after dance BTS

I am seriously addicted, especially after season 3 which was the best season so far, and I need more Anne with an E! Come on, CBC and Netflix, give us a season 4!

Save Anne!

Sunday night was the season 3 finale of Anne with an E. And what a finale that was! This season was about Anne growing up and finding herself. The finale so beautifully gave us answers to many of the questions Anne has struggled with, it was a joy to watch. I laughed, cried, threw stuff at my screen. Perfect, really. Just sharing some pictures here without real story spoilers because I can’t help myself.

The Anne and Gilbert feels were extremely strong. At the beginning there was this…

… and there was this thing Gilbert did which was so beautiful that my head was screaming “awwww!”  throughout all of it…

Anne Gilbert 3x10 (22)

A few seconds before this scene of Anne hanging outside her bedroom window she did something which had me almost destroying my laptop in frustration!

vlcsnap-2019-11-26-10h12m58s966

The whole Matthew and Marilla storyline was beautiful and the scene where Matthew speaks his feelings especially got to me. I think it’s a father-daughter thing that resonates so…

There was truly excellent Shirbert (Anne Shirley & Gilbert) drama at the end that I have been watching on loop countless times…

… with a lovely family moment for the Cuthberts too at the very end.

The final shot is this…

Anne end 3x10 (2)

… and then I found myself already fervently wishing for that season 4, hating the idea I’d have to wait a whole year for it. Alas, this finale-high was very shortlived as yesterday afternoon this announcement came from the show’s producer, Moira Walley-Beckett on Instagram:

Modified this post to add this message from Moira as well:

I tell ya, I was so counting on that 4th season that this completely threw me and I admit to having wiped away a tear. Anne with an E is being cancelled? It cannot be true! Tweeted my disbelief as well as soon as I found out…

The hashtag #renewannewithane was trending worldwide on Twitter for many hours yesterday, I added my support:

Apparently there have been over a million tweets with that hashtag! Yesterday, very late at night, I saw a statement from Moira in Entertainment Weekly, saying she would love to pen a film finale to Anne with an E. I’d still prefer a whole season or two or three, but if the very least we could get was a movie, I could sort of live with that.

I get passionate about shows I love but I’ve rarely been this passionate about a show. I’m so depressed about this news that I can’t even do my regular tour of post-episode fan videos on YouTube (let alone make my own, which I was planning to do). My heart just isn’t happy enough for that.

It’s such a shame that the finale-high was so quickly spoiled by the cancellation news. I’m still holding out for some good news; there is always hope, right? In the meantime, I’ll be sure to continue tweeting #renewannewithane and #saveannewithane. Heck, I’d even help crowdfund the whole thing! I did that for Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries at the time too, and they have now finished making a film that will be coming out in the new year sometime. Anne with an E next? Please say yes, CBC and Netflix!
