I miss him

Yesterday the current US president was welcomed to Brussels amid protests…

… while this morning on German TV former US president Barack Obama is being interviewed for the yearly German “Kirchentag” (a huge yearly church conference) that is being held in Berlin this year…

He was interviewed together with Angela Merkel (who, as I type this, is rushing to Brussels for the NATO meeting with Trump)…

… and I am painfully aware yet again how much I miss Obama as president!

A fan video post

In the past few months I have made a few new fan videos. I uploaded the latest today and thought I’d share. The first two videos may only appeal if you actually know the shows they were made for, the last video may have a wider appeal.

In October I made a video for the BBC series Silent Witness; it wasn’t for the more recent series, but for the older ones when Nikki was still working with Harry and Leo and the three of them made the best team. I started making fan videos because of this show and thought I was done because Harry and Leo are no longer there. Then I heard this song and immediately images of Nikki and Harry flooded back again. So, I dusted off the old clips I had once made, and created this video. I still miss Harry and Leo and the magic of these three together so very much… and I still secretly hope that Harry will one day return (sadly Leo will never be able to)!

The second video is for the Australian TV series A Place to Call Home. This past fall series 4 aired which was yet again good and very dramatic. I have made several videos before for this series but this time I made a video with only season 4 clips, illustrating the latest part of the journey for Sarah and George. So, beware of series 4 spoilers if you haven’t seen the latest A Place to Call Home series yet!

And last but not least, a ‘miscellaneous’ project I have had cooking for a while now, ever since I saw this video about President Obama. It is no secret that I have loved the Obamas in the White House and that I will miss them. I have been looking at pictures over the last months, mostly taken by White House photographer Pete Souza, and the images are beautiful, touching, fun and striking. I have been collecting them and all the while two “Don’t go” songs have been swirling around in my head while I look at them. So, I made a 7 minute video with images set to both these songs. In a working democracy it is inevitable that a president leaves, even if he was a very good one in my view, but I will miss the Obamas nonetheless…

I have been sitting on this video for a while (just added the last two images today) because I really don’t want to get into political discussions. It would be pointless, I won’t agree with the opposing view and the opposing view will not agree with me anyhow. However, especially after yesterday’s disastrous inauguration speech by the new president, I do really want to celebrate the Obamas and I am pleased to have now done that with this video.

“Take your broken heart…”

As inauguration day in the US draws nearer and nearer, my already heavy political heart grows heavier and heavier. I saw two videos today that mirror my sentiments pretty much exactly on that front.

The first video is from one of my favourite actors ever, Meryl Streep. It’s probably all over the news in the US, I haven’t watched actual TV news coverage here yet, but did come across it in a news feed on my phone. While accepting her Cecil B. DeMille award for acting at the Golden Globes last night, Meryl’s speech was heartfelt and very political, criticising Donald Trump without actually naming him…

Maybe it wasn’t the right platform to make things political but I loved this nonetheless! It touched me deeply and I love the sentiments expressed in her speech.

Another video that touched me deeply was this one called  “Yes we can” with people, famous and not so famous, summing up their favourite Obama moment.

For me, my fave Obama moments were about him embracing diversity – religious diversity including reaching out to the Muslim world, sexual diversity or cultural diversity. He talked about diversity when he first became president and it has become a theme in his whole presidency which is also a theme very close to my own heart!

Now, after 8 years, a change is coming. I always thought it couldn’t get worse than George W. Bush in the White House, but it has gotten worse – Donald Trump is almost president! That will affect the whole world in what I expect will be a very negative way. Absolutely nothing Trump has done since the election has calmed my fears in this respect. So, I mourn Obama leaving and I take heart in people like Meryl Streep who stand up to inhumanity, injustice and intolerance. She says at the end of her speech, quoting her friend Carrie Fisher/Princess Leia: “Take your broken heart, make it into art”.

My heart is broken for the state of the Western world, where isolationism is starting to take over, where tolerance and humanity are being pushed aside. I’m not sure blogging is art, but it certainly is expression and when my heart breaks like this, even over politics, I just need to express myself and create… blog posts! I really don’t want this blog to become all political but sometimes the heart overrules it all and a post like this happens…

Thank you Meryl Streep for your heartfelt speech. It makes my heart heal a little when I know there are people like you out there.

And thank you Barack Obama for being the most awesome US president in my lifetime.

I wish you could have achieved even more!

I don’t want to let you go…

I came across this cartoon by David Sipress from ‘The New Yorker’ which pretty much exactly states how I feel about the news nowadays…

And then I came across this video, which also exactly expresses my sentiments; I know his time is almost up but I don’t want Barack Obama to go…

The world is a-changing and I wish I could feel better about it.

Imagined conversations

If you like Trump and don’t like Obama and Biden, you’d better stop reading now…

I am still trying to come to terms with the US presidential election result and came across this meme that is all over the internet now: Joe Biden and Barack Obama having imagined conversations where Biden plans pranks to play on Donald Trump. Childish? Spiteful? Maybe… but these really made me laugh and that is an extremely rare thing for me when it comes to this election! The election result is what it is and I respect that but I still hate it. So, a little humour must step in to help me deal. Here goes, my fave Biden-Obama imagined conversations that I have come across so far…

Just looking at the pictures of these two men makes me realise that I am really going to miss them in the White House… and I dread the Trump presidency so very much! Sigh…

(OK, for now I’m done blogging about the US election).
