The Lizzie Bennet Diaries

My fan videos

I’m a sucker for Jane Austen novels and adaptations. So, when in the spring of 2012 I heard there was a YouTube vlog adapting Pride and Prejudice to modern times, I thought I’d give it a go. I started watching from the beginning at around the time when the first 8 episodes or so had aired and was instantly hooked.

In The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (you can watch the whole series on YouTube), Elizabeth Bennet (played by Ashley Clements) is a mass communications grad student, still living at home with her parents and her sisters and has a huge student loan debt. At a wedding she and her sisters meet Bing Lee, who has recently moved to the neighbourhood, and his friend William Darcy (Daniel Vincent Gordh). Of course, Lizzie instantly dislikes Darcy… and so the Pride and Prejudice story unfolds, set in 21st century California!

The whole story is told through vlogs which Lizzie makes. There are 100 episodes of about 5 minutes each (+ 2 bonus episodes that came out a year later). The vlogs feature mostly Lizzie, her friend Charlotte and her sisters and sometimes other special guests. To illustrate certain points Lizzie & co. often dress up and mimic the people they talk about. We only get to know Darcy through these reenactments at first and it isn’t until episodes 59 and 60 that we catch an actual actual glimpse of the man himself!  The show ran for a year and twice a week I was glued to YouTube, waiting feverishly for the the latest episode to come online! I loved that show and hated that it had to end. I still wonder sometimes how Lizzie and Darcy are doing now…

Towards the end of the Lizzie Bennet run I made my first fan video, about 2 weeks before the show ended. The suspense was killing me, waiting to see how Darcy and Lizzie would actually manage to get together. I thought the “With or Without You” cover was very fitting for this suspense, so I made a video…

And then we saw Lizzie doubting how to make her ‘secret heart’ known to Darcy…

Finally we got the happy ending we were hoping for!
