In my e-mail I receive regular “London Theatre” updates and this was in my inbox today:
That headline links to this article. Now, I know this news is a day or two old but this makes it extra official for me and it looks like I’ll have to plan another trip to London in January now! I think I read Uncle Vanya in high school but I can’t for the life of me remember what it’s about. Regardless, Richard back in the London theatre is something I can really look forward to! Finally something Richard-related for me to get really excited about again.
I know it can’t be helped due to the nature of the business but I don’t like getting excited over something that I’d really love to see Richard do and it then falling through. I recall that Edith Wharton Summer project that still hasn’t come to fruition (will it ever?), that musical that mysteriously was never to be and what happened to the priest project we heard of some months ago? I am sure I am missing more off the top of my head right now… and now there’s some mystery Korean scifi project he’ll be doing?
I wonder if that will really happen? I’m not holding my breath quite yet but I also don’t quite know how excited to be about this. I do like how totally different this project is and I do love how the man seems to be challenging himself in so many ways.
I so want to fangirl a new Richard project but The Lodge won’t be for me and I still can’t make myself do audiobooks. I thought the first Castlevania was alright but haven’t seen the second yet. Trevor is animation and not Rich in the flesh after all. I haven’t done the newest Wolverine audio play yet either – again, no visual Richard. I like to have audio and visual Richard combined. I’m curious about My Zoe and I’m curious about The Stranger, which he’s filming now, but even those don’t have me over-excited yet. That little dad-dance he posted on Instagram from the set of The Stranger was fun, though, so that at least was a little excitement there. 🙂
I will eventually attempt Castlevania and Wolverine and I will watch all the other projects for him and I hope they’ll be really good, but none of these projects, nor even the Korean scifi, makes my heart beat extremely wildly in anticipation. Let me be clear, I don’t begrudge him any of these projects and in everything he does, he’s always good! Also, this all makes him develop as an actor and become even better. However, these just aren’t projects I enjoy that much, I only watch them for him and not because I’d enjoy them independently from Richard.
Yet I still hold out hope for projects I can love, because even though the recent few years of Armitage projects haven’t excited me wildly (Urban and the Shed Crew excepted and that one is dead in the water as far as DVD release goes), the man for some reason or other still remains my favourite! Now finally, for the first time in a long time, I am getting excited again because Richard Armitage is coming back live on stage and within reach for me to go and see him! He’s co-starring with Toby Jones who I really like as an actor, he too is always good. Richard in a quality play, that really lifts my fangirl heart today. Here a little reminder of how good he is on stage: The Armitage in The Crucible…
Yes, I’m sure I’ll be there in January 2020 at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London.
Charlie … Clearance … AXL … there are probably more. But stage Armitage is like nothing else. It was exciting news even if he hasn’t confirmed it himself as of yet. I’m hoping it’s just that they’re waiting until they cast all the women to announce the actors beyond Toby Jones.

What was AXL? I don’t seem.to recall that one. Sometimes I wish I had a brain like yours, Serv, that remembers everything. 😊
Yes, I remain a little iffy because he hasn’t said anything himself but the other sources seen credible, so my fangirl heart is very hopeful.

(oh: and Baz Bamigboye, the original source, is considered very reliable. He used to write theatre features for the Daily Mail and he was the person who told us about The Crucible first.)

Summer….I was REALLY hoping he would do that part – he would have been fantastic in that role. Just my luck the sci fi thing will come to fruition and not Summer or The Seville Communion.

Yeah, Summer or Seville would be my preference over Korean scifi as well… Time will tell, I guess.

Esther I am beyond excited about Uncle Vanya I saw a version of it w Cate Blanchett at the Kennedy Center it seems like 12 or 13 years ago! My brain was feverishly trying dates for air fare already!! I don’t know about Seville and I think that would have been a wonderful project for him too.
Happy dance here and I learned what flossing was this past week too! 👏😉🤗😂

Best to wait with travel plans till dates are confirmed, I guess. But yes, finally something to really get excited about that looks like it really will be happening. Keeping everything crossed!

While I’m happy he’ll be on the stage that he loves so much, for me it’s just another project of his i’ll never see. So meh. Not excited one whit.
I’ve enjoyed Castlevania, even tho it’s animated Richie. For whatever, it’s comedy, really. Animated, gory comedy. I’m still trying to talk myself into really watching Pilgrimage. I’ll probably try The Lodge at some point.

Are you put off Pilgrimage because of the gore? I found it overall easy to anticipate the violence and just closed my eyes! I actually really enjoyed the concrpt and the scenery is breathtaking -not just Armitage!

Yeah, pretty much. Every says the gore ‘isn’t bad’. The only gore I can really tolerate is animated. (Hence why Castlevania doesn’t bother me much)

the gore is pretty gorey tbh (imo) but i do think i managed to avoid watching most if it!

Right now, my time is so very limited. I’m packing a house and trying to find another home. Movie watching will be pretty nil until the move is done. Or the house is found and the other house is packed.

Good luck with all that, Zee!!

I realize theater in London is a bummer for many as the travel is expensive. 😕
Pilgrimage was alright despite the gore (a few graphic parts but other than that less awful than expected) and The Lodge – I might give it a go once I know all the spoilers.

It is. It’s just expensive. That’s why I’m STILL pissed over how they handled the (lack of release) of The Crucible for the US and Canada. It still burns my gut!

Yeah, even I am pissed at the whole Crucible thing and I actually saw the play and the film in the movie theater!

I’m very much looking forward to the theatre!
Re The Stranger…I think it’s going to be a really watchable programme..the storyline is excellent (even if Coben isn’t a great writer) and it will centre almost entirely around his character. And in many way, I think it can be described as a love story…well a story about love/marriage/trust!
Looking forward to My Zoe even if I know virtually nothing about it.
I’m ambivalent about Castlevania…I think I mostly enjoyed hearing him swear so much!

“I think I mostly enjoyed hearing him swear so much!”
Oy, that’s my line!!
Very excited about a theater project—especially since I’m an Armitage theater virgin.

Hehe, honestly I was so shocked then peed myself laughing! Thing was i was reading all these interview where he’s so po faces about swearing and then Trevor is all “@#$&*£€¥:”
RA theatre virgin too 😂

I contemplated asking him about the swearing. “So, Mr. Armitage, do you get out 40+ years of pent-up Englishness while doing these voiceovers or are you actually a secret swearer and it all comes very easily to you?” 😉

If there is a q&a at some point you should ask that! 😀

Oh, yes, I am sure he is a secret swearer!

I only saw him in The Crucible (couldn’t afford to travel to see Love, Love, Love), and boy, was he good in it!! I think you’ll be in for a treat seeing Rich in the theatre, I couldn’t imagine him not being good.

Yeah, the swearing and muttering under his breath was the best part of Castlevania season 1 for me. I didn’t care that much for the whole vampire story, though.
The Stranger and My Zoe I do mildly anticipate, especially if he has substantial roles. We’ll see, maybe I’ll like that series / that movie more than I now anticipate doing.

with The Stranger-pretty much the whole story revolves around him. I’m really excited for it!

That is good news. Lots of Richard time!

Theatre with the Armitage involved sounds definitely good, Esther! Questionable others aside… 😉

You’ve sum up my feelings about a lot of his projects Esther, particularly the audio work and animation ,my only interest is because of Armitage. I want the visuals! And we know better now not to get our hopes up too soon about projects. I’m really looking forward to the Stranger ( mostly because of his look). Really exciting news about Uncle Vanya.

Yes, it is!
And I haven’t read The Stranger but by many accounts it sounds quite good. I’ll let myself be surprised when the time comes.

Trust me, you don’t.
AXL was the motocross bike project — he had tweeted about it, and then very shortly afterwards (like maybe 3 weeks) all the tweets disappeared and he announced for 08. It got made without him, though. It’s on US Netflix right now.

Chances of me getting to London for a play are pretty slim. I am looking forward to a nice binge-watch of The Stranger when it comes out. The Five was good, so I’m hoping The Stranger will be too.

Yeah, coming to London is quite an expense whe you live in Canada. 😦 If only ‘beam me up’ technology was available – for free!

I’m on the Pacific Coast, too, so it’s really far. I could use a transporter, for sure!
