I’m way too late to the Richard Armitage Sundance film festival and Red Dragon convention parties but on this very rainy Sunday here in The Netherlands, I just need to share some of my fave images of the past weeks that I have just been reviewing in peace and quiet (instead of feverishly perusing on the go).

This one from the Sundance film festival has already become a fave. The look, the smile, the placing of the hand… all swoon worthy! He is almost inviting the viewer in.

I liked that Richard reconnected with Mindy Kaling from Ocean’s Eight:

At Sundance I thought he looked most comfortable with Amy Ryan, his co-star in the Love Love Love play he did in the fall of 2017. For some reason, I wouldn’t mind seeing them together as a couple in a movie, they look really good together.

Although he did have some fun with his The Lodge people, the movie he had come to promote at Sundance…

… to me there wasn’t much magic with Riley Keough, his The Lodge co-star, at least not in the pictures I saw. They were nice but a little perfunctory to me…

However, this following one did seem quite sexy to me somehow… I think it’s the leaning in and the darkness surrounding the rest of the image that gives it some intimacy…

Of course there were many many more images, but I won’t share them all here, these were just the stand out ones for me. As was this little film he shared of him skiing down a mountain while he was there, I just loved that!

Sundance was the last weekend in January and during the first weekend in February, Richard was in London. I happened to be in London as well that weekend for a last-minute visit to see my brother and niece but had totally not registered that I’d be in London on the same weekend as the Red Dragon convention that was being held near Heathrow airport. I didn’t have time to go there at the last minute, but did follow the goings on a bit on my phone. I got a huge kick out of the whole “Jills Gymkhana” tweets thing, all thanks to Kate who reports on it so beautifully here. In fact, read all four of Kate’s accounts of the weekend over on her blog, I promise it’s worth it. As is all that Armidreamer has reported about her visit to RDC as well, and of course Guylty has lovely reports too, the latest one as I type now is this one. Guylty also took loads of pictures, so be sure to check them out as well, for instance here.

Anyway, I was going to share my fave images that I came across, like this one by Guylty:

I love the little shadow show that Richard is performing. I liked these images too (don’t know who took them, so if someone claims credit, please let me know)…

In fact, Richard’s outfit looked almost the same as what he had worn in Newcastle at the film festival last year. Same leather jacket and same (kind of) pants as at NIFF…

I also really liked these two images (again, let me know, don’t know who took these)…

A fan book had been made for Richard by some fans, which he received and sweetly acknowledged…

Yep, after seeing all these, and reading all the lovely accounts, I am on a bit of an Armitage-high right now.

I like that Richard showed his Equity card as a support for unions a little later on in February…

And now it’s all about The Stranger, Richard’s newest project that he has started to film now in Manchester.

It sounds good, the cast sounds great (if you read German, see the excellent cast recap here on Herba’s blog) and this is something new to look forward to after the disaster of Berlin Station season 3 (I quit watching after 2 episodes). With all this Rich-love there is also a little annoyance: I just hope that (preaching aside) he doesn’t use this emoji too much…

I know someone in real life who uses the begging/praying hands all the time in text messages, most recent example being a text I sent saying “Happy Birthday to your son!” and she answered the message with that emoji (yet again)… a regular smiley or just ‘thank you’ would have sufficed. It always feels overly submissive and even insincere to me, which annoys me to no end.

But let me end on a positive fangirling image. This was shared by Mina Tander on her Instagram recently…

… and it gives me much joy! Being a Richard Armitage fan has been quite fun these days. 🙂

    I think that emoji just means “please,” but in general I find emoji pileups annoying a h***. We have a written language, please use it to communicate. (Not that anyone has really listened to him anyway)

    Like you, I can’t believe how past the last few weeks have gone by. Except for the lumberjack look his Sundance clothes mostly left me cold, but it meant when I saw the RDC outfits I was thrilled — got my Richard Armitage back! He looks so much more comfortable. (Incidentally, I don’t recall one picture of Riley Keough where I thought she looked warm or relatable so I think that’s maybe just her “look”).

    1. She uses that emoji for please AND thank you. It’s her right, but… ugh! Enough already.
      I liked his Sundance clothes fine enough but I liked the RDC black outfit more, maybe because it reminded me of NIFF. Maybe that’s it with Riley Keough, she does seem stand-offish, especially with crossing her arms so often like that in pictures.

        I wasn’t watching, but I don’t think Ilaria claimed the Sundance look even though I think he must have been styled. Somebody remarked during RDC that he was low-key channeling Francis Dolarhyde, which made me giggle. I was thinking back to his remark in the GoG days that he tried not to wear too much black but he ended up wearing it most often anyway. It definitely suits him. Also, it makes me feel like he could achieve his goal of invisibility if he wanted to, which is somehow reassuring.

        1. I liked that black/white sweater, the pants and shoes fine, the lumberjack look was fine too. I just didn’t care much for that camel coat on him.
          Maybe some aspects of Dolarhyde are closer to him than we think. 😉 In any case, I’m always partial to black clothes and I love him in them. I can totally imagine him not attracting any attention when he’s out and about dressed like that.

            1. I love that each person has their own preferences when it comes to his clothes. 🙂
              Maybe if he’d have paired it with a scarf or something, I’d have liked it better. The coat in itself I didn’t find awful, for some reason I just didn’t think it suited him so very well. He’s better in blue or black, I feel.

                Looking at the pics, the event was sponsored by a coat designer. So that’s why everyone at the event was in big wooly coats. Which is probably why it didn’t quite work with his outfit . Do wonder if they got to keep the coats?

                The Woolrich stuff I liked the camel coat although it did not fit him but that lumber jacket was just no IMO 😛😉

              5. Yeah I don’t mind black like a black tee shirt or sweater I just don’t like buffalo plaid or that type of style on a guy myself. He’s got such a great bod and can wear clothes so well I like his jumper look and trousers even w his trainers as well as his Proctor boots. He was being a good boy and went with the swag there at Sundance. Woolrich is an outdoor clothing manufacturer very nice.

    1. Yes! He seems to really like leather jackets. In fact, that might be a nice topic for another blog post – showing a collection of Richard in leather jackets! Hmmm, good one to exhuastively research, methinks. 😉

        I don’t look at the German board all that often, but apparently they were into this topic (how many leather jackets does Armitage have) a few years ago — you might find valuable supplementary information there. They are a very meticulous group.

  5. Thanks for the link Esther. A great selection of pics. and they show how busy RA was in such a short time. We have very little for months and then a deluge of pics and RA movements – I don’t blame you for taking you time to peruse ( and savour?) them.

    I thought the jumper was nice and trousers at Sundance were comfy. I hated that lumberjack I hope he gave that away when he returned to London. I thought his skiing vid was delightful. I was viewing it today for a chuckle!
    RDC: casual ok if he is happy and comfortable
    I love emojis and I use them a lot.
    I find sometimes they convey better what I am trying to say than words and I am a word freak!
    Thank you for the summary on Richie!
    He looks happy and healthier then last fall and I love your enthusiasm and joy in writing this blog post! I was smiling all the way thru!!😘👏👏👍
    P.S I don’t use praying hands I didn’t even know this emoji existed 😛

    1. Oh, I don’t mind emojis in general, I use them too. In fact, I remember once seeing Pride & Prejudice summarized in emojis that I remember enjoying a lot. Just took a moment to search for it and it’s still there on the internet from 9.5 years ago! https://bookshop.livejournal.com/1010612.html
      It’s been fun catching up on Rich like this. I had seen it all as it happened, but this afternoon was all about savouring it.
      Oh, and thanks for not using the praying hands. I’d never shoot you if you did, but if possible, keep them away from me. 😉

              1. Esther well I guess the article you linked I just made an exsme. Should be party amok I like two party stringers like happy times lets 🎊🎉 but on your screen it came out as not even sure myself. I am very predictable in my emoji use. I just found out yesterday that peach 🍑 emoji in our Richard context refers to his um bum. The blogs are certainly educational!

        I might have more patience in thirty years, when there’s some consensus how to use them. They’re essentially a form of hieroglyphic. The problem right now is (as you note in your original post) there’s little consensus on what they mean or how they should be used. I can’t even always see them — often a broken graphic sign is all I see. And this term for the first time I found them in formal essays submitted to me for grading (had to add another line to my list of “don’ts”). Right now, they convey more misunderstanding than understanding imo.

          1. Esther, that is an interesting article. I had never heard of Mozilla platform?
            The ending w the Apple. Vs Google interpretation is funny and spot on.
            But as I have found out recently even language and certain words and phrases can be misinterpreted.

            I would never contest that written language can fail to convey its intent — but it’s relatively rare that you wouldn’t know in English whether a word meant “thank you” or “please,” and even in German, where “bitte” sometimes means “you’re welcome,” it’s pretty much always clear. Like — should we really be having this much problem communicating basic ideas like please and thank you? Is that much more work just to type “please”? To me the problem starts with the apparent state of affairs that it’s impossible to tell from media text whether someone is being ironic or not. Once emojis surmount *that* problem, I’ll be happy to consider it as a serious mode of communication. Till then, I’ll stay as far away from it as possible; I almost never find a situation in which it actually improves something. (Then again, I think the original novel of Pride and Prejudice is better than any adaptation).

            1. LOL, so do I! But I also love that little emoji spoof of it.
              I ldo use smiling emojis to underline my pleasure with something. Occasionally I’ll use an angry emoji while texting but again, usually only after saying something in writing and then emphasizing with said emoji. I find I use just a handful of them regularly. I just find them cute. However, the praying hands are not so cute to me anymore… Oh, and my daughter calls the winking smiley ( 😉 ) a “pedophile smiley”, she finds that one creepy!

                I use two, but in plain text — 🙂 and 😦 so it’s clear that they will go over as typed even if there’s a technical glitch, but that’s it, and I try to avoid them as well. I really find there’s much less confusion using words and I don’t mind typing out indications of my tones or emotions if someone finds them unclear. But frankly, a lot of times even if I can see that something is a smiley as opposed to a broken graphic, I can’t tell which smiley it is anyway.
