Micro-manager

We have a manager at work who is so busy with policy stuff, he was rarely available to us as a team. Nice guy but a bit of a macro-manager. We have now hired someone for middle management and he is turning out to be a micro-manager…

The new guy hasn’t started picking fault yet, but all the signs of a beginning micro-manager are there… I get that he wants to understand what I (and others in my team) do but when he starts telling me to ask permission to occasionally work from home (I really think I am old enough to decide for myself when to work from home or not – most days I’m at the office anyhow!) or he looks at me sceptically because he thinks my workload isn’t enough (hope I cured him from that when I sent him my work list), then I start feeling hemmed in and my irritation rises to an extremely high level!

I think I’d rather have the macro-manager back who lets me get on with things as I see fit and where I see fit (and it’s been going very well for the past year and a half now).  I get that the new guy wants to find his place but leave me the f alone and let me do my thing! I’ll call you if I need you…

Sorry, just venting for a bit. This situation shall not prevail in the long run, I will work towards that!

  1. Esther, my situation Is the reverse. I went from 20 years of micromanager bosses to the last 4 1/2 as macromanager boss. The partners who bought the practice I work for never owned any sort of business before. The older partner got really sick in 2017 and passed away last Sept. The younger guy inherited a mess and is now just keeping the practice above water. I’m in the office everyday from 6:30am to 5pm (under the old regime it was 5:30 am to 6 pm) and on salary now. The difference in management style is enormous and I think it boils down to TRUST. This guy trusts me which is huge for me and my confidence. He knows I know what I am doing and lets me run the office freely. The old bosses fought within themselves and no matter how much loyalty I showed, it was always Michele when did this go out or do you have the memo from 1995? So to me big differences and big stress induced differences! I hope things settle down by you..

    1. I agree, it is a trust thing! But who is he to not trust me after only working here for a month? I know, it’s all about him and not about me… I’m giving it a little time and then we’ll see where this goes.
I’m happy for you that you don’t have to deal with micromanaging anymore.

      1. I stuck with the previous owners for 20 years! I’ll admit mainly b/c financially it was very good and afforded me opportunities to travel, buy a house
shop (I’m a clothesaholic) and I was afraid having been here so long that the job market wouldn’t get me the same level of money and freedom. I would wade it out a little. It’s only been a month and discussion is healthy then you both will know where you each stand.

  2. Ugh, that’s tough. Micro-managers are really counter-productive to an efficient working relationship. Experienced staff should always be given the benefit of the doubt. How long has he been at your company? Maybe he is just establishing some sort of authority and will revert back to a more trusting boss?

well, you know what they say: people don’t quit jobs, they quit managers. I’d be looking at the calendar and figuring out when you can be sending out your resume. (Don’t know how the job market works where you are.) Life is too short for this kind of aggravation, if you can avoid it. You’ve got tons of both hard and soft skills.

    1. I tell ya, he talked to me on Monday afternoon, on Wednesday (on my day off) I was searching for jobs online. That can’t be right, that one such conversation is so unsettling. I don’t want to be chased away by a new manager, so if he doesn’t loosen up, I’ll be confronting him. We’ll see where that leads…

  4. That graphic with the beard could almost be RA. He can watch me anytime!

But seriously, I’ve had a new boss since July. She’s nice enough, but it’s a very different direction and pace. Maybe time for a change. Brushing up the resume.

    1. Ugh, so sorry you have to deal with that. Believe me, I feel ya!
LOL on your RA association! I didn’t quite have that but looking at it again, yeah, I see your point. Alas, my new manager looks nothing like that…
