Is there life on Mars?

My goodness, every single time I switch on the news, some new horror seems to be unfolding. Baghdad, Bangladesh, Boris Johnson as foreign secretary, Nice attack, last night attempted coup in Turkey… This year didn’t start out so great with one of my big heroes, David Bowie, passing away and now I’m thinking the actor Paul Bettany may have stumbled onto something in this tweet he wrote just after the Brexit vote…

The words “Bowie was the glue holding the universe together” keep popping up in my mind every time the next tragedy announces itself. Ridiculous, I know, but my goodness, it does seem like that, doesn’t it?

I’ve been very busy the past week and there was virtually no time for blogging but even if there had been, my mind is drawing a blank on what to blog about… it seems so trivial to fangirl when the world seems to be falling apart…and yet, I keep on trying. 🙂

But now even fangirling makes me wistful! Looks like Richard Armitage won’t be wearing spandex or be appearing as a rocker on-screen after all, he’s had to back out of the Mid Life movie. Such a pity! I would have loved to see him in that movie. And although I am thrilled that it is now confirmed that he will indeed be doing the Love, Love, Love play in New York, I’m also a little sad because I won’t have the finances to go. I’ve already been wanting to fly to the US to see two close friends of mine whom I haven’t seen in 5 years. How cool would it be if I could see them AND go see the play? But, alas, my current job ends next week and I don’t have a new job lined up yet… so, nope, can’t afford seeing my friends and Richard, which makes me sad. However, I am thrilled for all the fans who will manage to go! I will just have to live vicariously through all of you…

So, it’s all a bit of a downer right now, I’m afraid… Luckily I have a 3.5 week holiday with my husband and kids to look forward to! We are leaving next week Saturday for the east of the Czech Republic and a bit of Poland. That is, if the world doesn’t stop turning! I’m wondering, is there life on Mars?

I read last night that Erdogan was asking for asylum on Mars, but it looks like he has things under control again.

It’s gotten bad enough that even the US media are now running articles on what do about the news / how to get away from the news. I can’t say I am more bothered by it than normal, but I might be habituated. There’s also enough stuff going on around here that RL is constantly reminding me that it exists.

    1. Ha, wow! I had missed that asylum on Mars thing by Erdogan!
I’ve always been a news follower myself (when you grow up in Israel, it becomes second nature from a young age) but somehow lately, it seems tragedies follow each other quicker and quicker. I know there have always been dramas and awful news and tragedies, but lately it feels like it’s more than ever. Or maybe it’s media giving things more attention. Or maybe I’m just hypersensitive right now. Or maybe now with my kids growing up I worry more about the future. Or maybe it’s seeing the news spark more discrimination around me. I’m not sure what it is, but all this bad news with barely a breather seems to disturb me more and more… I’ve always enjoyed escapism but lately even that seems harder to do… I guess I am now more than ready for our family summer vacation when we usually exist in a bit of a bubble. 🙂

I think if I lived in the EU right now I would be more worried. Double whammy (problems on both borders) is certainly emotionally destabilizing. You can ask me again next week during the Republican National Convention, when it’s possible I will self-combust in anger.

  4. You know, I heard other people make that sort of comment about Bowie, that he was actually a metaphysical force, not just a musical one! Have fun on your vacation and try not to look at the news.

    1. Oh no, will this turn into another bonafide religion now? 😉
Thanks on the holiday wishes!! Will try to steer cleer, although some stuff does tend to filter through. I’ll either be all Rhett Butler-ish (“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn!”) or all Scarlett O’Hara-ish (“I can’t think about this now. I’ll go crazy if I do… I’ll think about it tomorrow!”) about it.

  5. A bit of a break from this continuing terrible news cycle would be welcome. My heart goes out to those affected by the violence and the uncertainties.

On an upbeat note, I hope that you have a fun and relaxing time on your upcoming trip! We do more “staycations” than vacations. Ha! Though we do get out of town a bit. Cheers!

    1. Yeah – my heart breaks for all those affected…
Thanks for the well wishes, Grati! And hey, don’t knock a staycation! Sometimes I think I’ve seen more of other places than my own home area…
