30 Day Movie Challenge – Day 7

Day 7 – The 7th DVD/BluRay movie from the right on your shelf

Well, I don’t have one shelf, but many, a whole cupboard dedicated to movies!

Not to mention a drawer of kids DVDs and two more drawers underneath the TV filled with some more DVD’s… Loads of shelves to choose from… But I’ll just stick with the shelves in my DVD cupboard. So, 7th movie from the right on each shelf…

Top shelf – The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

1996 BBC mini series adaptation of Anne Brontë’s novel which surprised me at the time (I had never read the novel).

It stars Tara Fitzgerald, Toby Stephens and Rupert Graves and I haven’t watched it in years!

I remember thinking it was quite a feminist series, about a woman escaping her abusive husband in the 19th century. I wonder what I’d think about it now…

 

2nd shelf – Persuasion (2007)

 

2007 adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry Jones.

I love Persuasion, one of my favourite Jane Austen novels. Although this adaptation was alright, it can’t hold a candle to the excellent 1995 adaptation with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds (which is also on my shelf, right beside this DVD)

 

 

3rd shelf –  Dan in Real Life

 

2007 movie with Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche about a widowed man who falls in love with his brother’s girlfriend.

Not the greatest of movies in my memory but I do remember quite enjoying it. I think I once bought it at a flea market or something. Again, this is a movie I haven’t seen in years.

 

 

4th shelf – Rebecca

 

1940 Hitchcock adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s novel. It stars Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine and is excellent!

This is also a movie I haven’t watched in a long while but I have watched it several times over the years. Gotta say, my fingers are starting to itch – I want to see this one again!

 

 

 

5th shelf – Erin Brockovich

 

Oooh, good movie with Julia Roberts (who won an Oscar for her role) and Albert Finney!

Actually, a few weeks ago it was on TV here and the kids saw the beginning and were intrigued but they had to get to bed so we switched it off. We should be watching this again in the near future. I honestly forgot I actually own the DVD!

 

 

 

6th shelf – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

 

Yeah, the title on the DVD is Dutch but the movie is in English (with optional Dutch subtitles). We have the whole series of DVDs and of course we have all the books too! They are all so much fun to watch/read! I love all the imagination that went into these stories.

 

 

 

7th shelf – The Lady

 

I came across this movie on sale somewhere about a year ago and bought it and watched it then. It’s from 2011 and tells the story of Aung San Suu Kyi (Michelle Yeoh) and her husband Michael Aris (David Thewlis). I knew little about her and had no idea she lived in England and was married with children there before she went to Burma and became famous for her political activism. This is her story and it’s fascinating and heartbreaking.

 

8th shelf – A History of Violence

 

A movie with Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello and Ed Harris.

Not my usual kind of movie but I bought it because of Viggo and ended up thinking it was quite alright! Not a fave, and I’ve got to say I’ve forgotten most of the plot, but I liked it. Or maybe I only did because of Viggo? Probably need to re-watch this one as well…
